The Weichselboden branch church in the Weichselboden cadastral community of Mariazell is a Roman Catholic branch church of the Gußwerk parish in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district in the state of Styria . It is consecrated to John in the desert .

history

The Innerberg main trade union in Eisenerz took over the costs for the construction of the church and later also took over the patronage. The foundation stone for the church was laid on June 30, 1773. The parish was founded before the church was completed, on August 16, 1774 in the Mariazell basilica in the presence of Abbot Berthold von St. Lambrecht and KK Ober Guberialrath Freiherr von Hölleg and Oberkammergraf Edler von Gruber from the Innerberger Main Union.

On September 21, 1777 the church was dedicated to St. John consecrated in the desert. In 1774 a three hundredweight bell was purchased. In 1820 the church received a four hundredweight bell that was also cast in Steyr. In 1914 the church had four bells. In World War I, three of them had to be delivered.

Thorough renovations took place in the years 1856 and 1932. Especially in the years from 1845 to 1860, thanks to well-known donors, many church equipment such as flags, carpets, candlesticks and robes could be purchased. Generous benefactors were, for example, Archduke Johann and wife Anna Plochl , Duke of Bordeaux, Duke Robert of Parma , Prince Heinrich von Bobon , Duke of Modena, Countess Szechengi of Hungary, Countess of Morsin. The 14 stations of the cross were donated by the forest ranger Johann Gollner in 1849.

The former parish church has been a branch church of the Gußwerk parish since 2000.

Architecture and equipment

The church is divided into three structural elements (rectory, nave, choir). The church is a single-nave, three-bay hall church in the Josephinian style with a straighter end of the choir, to which the rectory is directly connected. The church has a gable roof with a turret .

Wood is the dominant material, and the color scheme of the walls and the exterior facade is based on this. The main altarpiece shows the sermon of St. Johannes in the desert and was donated by an art dealer named Tempos from Mariazell, it was not recognized until 1966 as a work of the baroque painter Martin Johann Schmidt . It was created around 1785. The tabernacle, the candlesticks, angels and side parts of the high altar date from the same time. The pulpit is late baroque with a bulging basket and pictures of the four evangelists. The side altar is furnished with a simple copy of the Mariazell Mother of God and silver rococo candlesticks. Also worth mentioning are the two stained glass windows from 1934, which depict St. Show Hubertus and Saint Clement . The inventory also includes the simple wooden music gallery, a picture of St. Anna as well as one of the reading teachers Maria and one of St. Joseph .
