The Mariazellerland is located in a valley in Upper Styria near the Lower Austrian border. The main town is Mariazell , by far the most important pilgrimage site in Austria.

Location and landscape

The Mariazellerland is located in the middle of the Northern Limestone Alps , 80 kilometers south of Sankt Pölten and 120 kilometers north of Graz . It lies in the angle between the Ybbstal Alps to the northwest, the Türnitz Alps to the northeast, the Hochschwab Group to the southwest and the Mürzsteg Alps to the southeast.

The space Mariazell is a secluded but easily accessible inner-alpine basin landscape , between Ötscher Massif , Gemeindealpe and Zeller hats in the West, and Koller-Buchler Alps bandwagon and Bürgeralpe in the East, the conclusion of the south form tribein and student . This is why one speaks of the Mariazell Basin . At the same time, the valley drains partly to the north to the Erlauf , which rises here in the area, and partly to the south to the Salza , which passes east-west. Therefore, the area also forms a pass landscape , which forms the watershed between the two Danube tributaries Erlauf and Enns (the Salza – Enns train circles the Ybbstal Alps, and flows into the Danube far above the Erlauf to the west). This is why the name Mariazeller Passlandschaft is also used. The Erlauf-Enns valley watershed is right next to Mariazell station in St. Sebastian (approx.  845  m above sea level ). The Mariazellerland then also includes the side valleys of this basin area, in particular that of the Erlaufsee and the Halltal upstream of the Salza, in a broader sense also the Salzatal downstream from Gußwerk and the Aschbachtal to the Seebergsattel, which today belong to the enlarged municipality of Mariazell.

Slavs took possession of the land in the 6th century AD . In 1025 , Emperor Konrad II gave parts of the county in the Mürz Valley as a gift to his sister-in-law Beatrix. The donation involved 100 hubs , which also included the area of ​​what would later become the Mariazell market. Long-term disputes ended in 1151 in favor of the St. Lambrecht Abbey . Shortly afterwards, the parish of Mariazell and the rule of Aflenz were divided . December 21, 1157 is traditionally considered to be the founding day of Mariazell. Over the centuries, what is by far the most important pilgrimage site in Austria today has developed , here is the Magna Mater Austriae . Mariazell was one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria-Hungary as early as the 19th century.

On May 2, 1907, passenger traffic on the Mariazell Railway to Mariazell began operations.

Economy and Infrastructure

The pilgrimage and holiday destination of Mariazell is the main attraction of the Mariazeller Land. The place is also the seat of the Mariazeller Land Tourist Association .

St. Sebastian north of Mariazell is home to most of the infrastructure facilities in Mariazellerland, including a. also the southern end point of the Mariazellerbahn . The Mariazellerstraße B 20 runs from St. Pölten over the Seebergsattel to Kapfenberg in Mürztal .
