Wegscheid branch church
The Wegscheid branch church in the village of Wegscheid in the Mariazell community is a Roman Catholic branch church of the Gußwerk parish in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district in the state of Styria . It is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary.
history
In 1710 the Countess von Heister built a wooden church at the current location. On February 11, 1894, a fire broke out in the adjacent inn, which also struck the church and completely destroyed it. It was then rebuilt from stone, facing west, and consecrated on September 28, 1895 by the Bishop of Seckau, Leopold IV. Schuster . A small cemetery was also laid out in 1896 after the owner of the Wegscheid Hotel at the time, Johann Rohrbacher, gave the parish's property to the parish free of charge.
Architecture and equipment
The church is a hall with a flat ceiling and a drawn-in front arch . The choir is closed with a groin vault . The facade roof turret with pointed helmet was erected in 1895. The altarpiece “The Visitation of the Virgin Mary” is the work of the painter Christian Sandrock from 1895. The neo-Gothic framework was donated by his sister Adele Sandrock . Two small equestrian statues of St. Martin and St. George are, like the confessional, from the second half of the 17th century, of baroque origin. The glass chandeliers were made in the first half of the 20th century.
