Rudolf List (born October 11, 1901 in Leoben , Styria , † November 28, 1979 in Graz ) was an Austrian writer and journalist .

Life

Rudolf List was born on October 11, 1901 in Leoben and after graduating from the grammar school there, he began studying German , philosophy and art history at the University of Graz . He was a member of the Catholic student associations KÖStV Traungau Graz (since 1920) and KÖStV Glückauf Leoben (since 1922). From 1924 to 1928 he appeared as editor-in-chief of the Leobner Zeitung and in 1927/28 was editor-in-chief of the cultural magazine Blätter für Kunst und Schrifttum . From 1928 to 1938 List was the head of the features and culture section of the Vienna daily Reichspost and from 1928 to 1935 he was also editor-in-chief of the illustrated weekly newspaper Die Woche . In addition, from 1933 to 1936 he was President of the Association of Catholic Writers and Journalists in Austria . In addition, after Austria's annexation to the German Reich in 1938 , he worked from 1940 to 1945 with various contributions to the confessional book of Austrian poets , in which the "Anschluss" was celebrated. He was the culture editor of the Brünner Tagblatt and from 1946 to 1947 and 1949 to 1951 editor-in-chief of the Obersteirische Zeitung in Leoben. In between, he appeared from 1947 to 1948 as editor-in-chief of the monthly for cultural and intellectual life Austria in Graz. He practiced other journalistic activities from 1952 to 1953 as editor of the Rieder Volkszeitung and from 1954 to 1966 as culture editor of the Südost-Tagespost in Graz.

His main literary activity began around his 30th birthday, when he published his first main work in 1931 with the Little Bruckner Novella. In the year 36 followed, among other things, the novel Michael or in 1961 the stories Silver Night . He also published six volumes of poetry, essays, literature and local history publications. Including among others Die Bergstadt Leoben (1968), Styrian Church Guide (2 volumes; 1976/79), Admont Abbey 1074–1974. Festschrift for the 900th anniversary (1974) or opera and operetta in Graz (1974). From 1967 he also worked for the reference work Art and Artists in Styria , which appeared in several volumes. Numerous composers have taken poems from his six volumes of poetry to set to music (including Alois Pachernegg , Franz Theodor Kaufmann , August Stelzer , Leopold Suchsland and Rudolf Weishappel ). In 1957 List received the Peter Rosegger Prize of the Styrian regional government, in 1962 he was awarded the title of professor and in 1972 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art . List died on November 28, 1979 at the age of 78 in Graz and was then buried at the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .
