Leopold Schuster

Leopold Schuster (born October 24, 1842 in Sankt Anna am Aigen ; † March 18, 1927 in Graz ) was Prince-Bishop of Seckau (today: Diocese of Graz-Seckau ).

Life

Leopold Schuster was born into a farming family in East Styria. He first attended the Episcopal Boys' Seminar and then the Academic Gymnasium in Graz. After graduating from high school , which he passed with distinction, he began studying theology at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz.

Leopold Schuster was ordained a priest on July 9, 1865, then worked as a chaplain in Eisenerz (Styria) and as an educator and teacher in the episcopal seminary. In 1870 he completed his studies with a doctorate in theology. As early as 1874, Leopold Schuster was appointed professor of theology and worked as professor for canon law and church history at the Karl-Franzens-University, of which he was rector in the academic year 1888–1889.

After three years as provost of the city parish of the Holy Blood in Graz, Leopold Schuster was appointed the fifty-third prince-bishop of the diocese of Seckau on October 20, 1893 and solemnly installed in his office on December 31, 1893 in Salzburg by Archbishop Johannes Evangelist Haller . His enthronement took place on January 6, 1894 in Graz Cathedral.

In addition to his church activities, Schuster published several books on church history and religious topics. He dealt particularly intensively with his predecessor, Prince Bishop Martin Brenner and his contemporary Johannes Kepler . From 1892 to 1897 he was a member of the State Historical Commission for Styria .

Dr. Leopold Schuster died in Graz on March 18, 1927 at the age of 85. He was buried in the bishop's crypt in the mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II in Graz. After a new burial place for the bishops of Graz-Seckau was created in Graz Cathedral in 2010 , the deceased bishops were transferred to the new bishop's crypt.
