The Villacher Kirchtag has been held annually in Villach in Carinthia , Austria , since August 1, 1936 , and today consists of over 100 individual events. It is considered the largest traditional festival in Austria and now lasts eight days, if you add the Villach City Run, which takes place directly before, even ten.

history

Villacher Kirchtag in 1995

The festival committee chaired by the mayor organized the first church day in 1936 to commemorate the right granted by Emperor Friedrich in 1225 to hold a fair on Jacob's day. At that time, Villach was given the right to hold a fair 14 days before and 14 days after Jakobi (July 25).

From 1940 to 1947 the church day was canceled due to the war . The first church day after the war in 1948 was the first major event where food was served without food stamps . In 1950, the Villacher Bauerngman , a charitable men’s association founded in 1908, introduced the church day shop . The children's cash register is filled by the loader activity , from which those in need are still supported today. In 1966, the Villacher Kirchtag association introduced the so-called Customs Week before the festival .

In 2020, the Villacher Kirchtag was canceled due to the ban on events, which will apply until the end of August 2020.

The highlight of the Villach Church Day is the traditional costume parade on the first Saturday in August. The festival begins on the Sunday before and ends on the Sunday after. The custom week has meanwhile been replaced by the term church day week.

organization

Since 2013 the festival has been organized by Villacher Kirchtag GmbH , which is majority owned by the city of Villach . Villacher Bauerngman holds a symbolic share in the GmbH (0.3 percent) . The Villacher Kirchtag association and its members have only acted as an advisory board since then. With the organizational restructuring, one wants to exclude that club members are personally liable for the festival, the budget of which has long exceeded the million euro limit. Joe Presslinger has been the managing director of the GmbH since it was founded.

Vegetables, spices, herbs, sweet and sour cream, cinnamon, saffron, which give the soup its yellowish color, and the three types of meat beef, chicken and pork are essential in Villach's Kirchtagssuppe. All three types of meat are then cut into small pieces and served in the soup.

  • Clean, wash and chop the vegetables. Serve with the water, herbs and spices (except saffron) and the meat and do not simmer too much until the meat is done and a strong soup is created. Strain through a fine sieve and let the meat cool down and cut into small cubes.
  • Set aside a cup of the hot base soup and soak the saffron in it.
  • Mix the sour cream and whipped cream and stir into the basic soup. Add saffron, bring to the boil briefly. Season again to taste
