Günther Albel (born January 8, 1974 in Villach , Carinthia ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and mayor of the city of Villach since 2015 .

Life

Günther Albel was born on January 8, 1974 in Villach . He graduated from the Villach Commercial Academy and is a civil registrar. The enthusiastic athlete ( running and floorball ) is married and has two children.

politics

Günther Albel has been a member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) since 1998 . In 2003 he was elected to the municipal council of Villach, where he was club secretary of the SPÖ municipal council from 2006 to 2009. From May 2012 to March 2015, Günther Albel was the first deputy mayor responsible for the departments of building matters, urban planning, culture, youth, real estate, fire brigade and museum .

On June 14, 2014, Albel was unanimously elected as the executive chairman of the SPÖ-Villach and in the 2015 municipal council elections as the successor to Helmut Manzenreiter as mayor of the city of Villach.

At the beginning of 2016 there was criticism from parts of the population and politicians against the redesign of the Hensel barracks in Villach, which the Interior Ministry had planned as accommodation for around 450 refugees in the course of the refugee crisis in Europe . After discussions between Albel and the then Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner , an agreement was reached on the new Langauen location .

In 2018, Infineon succeeded in investing 1.6 billion euros in Villach with Albel’s participation . After several rounds of negotiations, the board decided in favor of Austria ; the Regensburg, Dresden and Kulim locations in Malaysia were also candidates for the new factory. The amount is the highest private investment in the history of Carinthia and in Austria for years. Short official runs, kindergarten expansion and forward-looking housing construction, along with talks and promises of support, were just as decisive as increasing various budgets to support the infrastructure to be created. Villach will invest around 10 million euros in these measures by 2021.

Controversy

During the federal presidential election in Villach, under the leadership of Günther Albel as chairman of the district electoral authority, errors occurred in the counting of votes and the recording of the election protocol. Villach was partly responsible for the decision of the Constitutional Court to repeat the election. The Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office opened criminal proceedings against Albel on suspicion of abuse of office . The FPÖ and Norbert Hofer joined the proceedings of the VfGH privately. You want to assert pecuniary loss. However, the case was dismissed.
