Helmut Manzenreiter (born July 10, 1946 in Knittelfeld , Styria ) was mayor of the city of Villach from 1987 to 2015 .

Life

In 1967 Manzenreiter moved to the “railway town” of Villach as an employee of the ÖBB .

Helmut Manzenreiter has been a member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria ( SPÖ ) since 1963 . From 1972 to 1974 he was district chairman of the Socialist Youth and from 1974 to 1984 he was also deputy country chairman. During this time he also took on functions as local group chairman of the railway workers' union and as staff representative chairman of the ÖBB for the area of ​​train conveyance management.

In 1979 Helmut Manzenreiter was elected to the city council of Villach and in 1984 was appointed city ​​councilor for finance and environmental protection. In 1987 he took over the mayor's office. In 1991 the first re-election as mayor took place. Helmut Manzenreiter was the first mayor in Villach directly elected by the people. On April 23, 1999, Manzenreiter was elected the Carinthian SP chief and successor to Michael Ausserwinkler. Federal Chancellor Viktor Klima played a key role in his installation as state party chairman. Due to great resistance to his internal reform and personnel policy, Manzenreiter resigned on November 12, 1999 as Carinthian SPÖ regional chairman. He was re-elected in the mayoral elections in 1997, 2003 and 2009. In 2010, Helmut Manzenreiter ran again for the state chairmanship of the SPÖ Carinthia, but withdrew his candidacy a few days before the party congress and supported Herwig Seiser, who was also invited to the SPÖ district party conference, as a candidate for the state chairman. On June 12, 2014, he announced that he would no longer run in the municipal council elections on March 1, 2015 . His successor was his party colleague Günther Albel .

Helmut Manzenreiter has a son.

In 2017 he became honorary consul of Azerbaijan for Carinthia and Styria.
