Team Austria is a project started in 2007 by the radio station Ö3 and the Austrian Red Cross . The aim of this project is to get as many people as possible to help with e.g. B. Moving natural disasters . For this purpose, every adult can register on a website and announce their performance and special skills (e.g. foreign languages, ...). In an emergency, the task force can be supported by a large number of additional volunteers.

In 2016, around 50,000 helpers were registered in the Austria team. The administration of the volunteers is relatively simple. Registrations are made via the Internet, and training takes place in brief instructions at the Red Cross. Members must be at least 18 years of age. In the event of an emergency, the employees are insured like other Red Cross members.

Areas of application

The Austria team has already been deployed to remove storm damage or snow masses and also used for interpreting services for paramedics and emergency doctors. There were larger deployments within the framework of the Austria Flood Aid Team and the Austria Refugee Aid Team . In addition to disaster relief, other projects were developed with which the Austria team helps people in need in everyday life, such as the Austria Tafel team and the Austria lifesaver team .

Team Austria flood relief

Members of the Austria team were deployed on a larger scale, among other things, during the flood disaster in 2009 and 2013 . The helpers from Team Austria supported those affected with tidying up and cleaning work and helped with the care of evacuated people.

Team Austria blackboard

Team Austria started a new project in 2010 under the name Team Austria Tafel , whereby volunteers collect food that is near the expiry date in the grocery store and distribute it to those in need. For example, Red Cross offices are used as distribution points, but we also work with other social institutions such as the SOMA stores .

Team Austria Refugee Aid

The Austria team also proved itself in refugee aid during the refugee crisis from 2015 . The structure of Team Austria was used to convey the private commitment of the population to the aid organizations deployed. In the acute phase, it was about helping the refugees in emergency accommodation, e.g. B. when registering, serving food or allocating beds. In the long term, refugees are to be accompanied, for example, on official routes and German courses.

Team Austria lifesaver

Another project was launched in 2017 under the name Team Austria Lifesaver . A smartphone app makes it possible to send qualified first aiders from the surrounding area to the emergency location in the event of a cardiac arrest and have a public defibrillator fetched. Not only paramedics can take part, but also first-aiders with an upright 16-hour first aid course. These should bridge the time until the arrival of the emergency services with efficient cardiopulmonary resuscitation in order to improve the chances of survival and prognosis after a cardiac arrest.

Transfer to other countries

As part of the "Team Civil Protection" project, the idea and concept of "Team Austria" is to be exported to other European countries as early as 2009. It is co-financed by the EU. The countries Germany, Great Britain and Poland are interested.

The plan is to transfer the Team Austria system, including the media campaign and the training of the members, with the support of the EU and the project name SAVE.regions to South Moravia in order to find volunteers there and transfer them to the currently predominantly professional aid organizations, such as the fire brigade or Involve emergency services.

After the Austria team had proven itself in numerous missions nationwide, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional association of the German Red Cross received the order from the DRK General Secretariat in 2009 to evaluate the feasibility of this concept in Germany as part of a pilot project. Team MV was officially founded on the occasion of World Red Cross Day on May 8, 2011. Other comparable initiatives emerged in 2013 as Team Bayern , under the responsibility of the Bavarian Red Cross and the broadcasting station Bayern 3 , and under the leadership of a project group of the Dresden Förderverein des Technische Hilfswerk as a team Central Germany for the federal states of Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia .

Media awards

  • Team Austria was awarded the Summit Emerging Media Award 2007 for the interactive map of helpfulness and the banner .
  • At the Columbus award ceremony in 2008 there were three awards for the advertising campaign for Team Austria.
  • In 2008, Team Austria received the silver award in the social category from the International Advertising Association .
