Birgit Zotz (born August 7, 1979 in Waidhofen an der Thaya ) is an Austrian cultural anthropologist , tourism scientist and author of non-fiction and specialist books.

Life

education

Zotz was born as Birgit Hutter. She grew up in Loibes , attended the Vienna Music High School from 1993 and studied the saxophone instrument at the Franz Schubert Conservatory from 1993 to 1997 . She completed studies in tourism science at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz and ethnology at the University of Vienna . She concluded this with studies on the development of tourism in Tibet (2008) and on Tibetan oracle priests (2010).

Scientific work

As a cultural anthropologist, Birgit Zotz deals with topics of religious ethnology such as initiation and the oracle . One of her main research areas is Buddhist topics. She also dealt with the work of Lama Anagarika Govinda and the movement that originated from him. From the estate of Govinda, she published his records of ritual initiations in Tantric Buddhism.

As a tourism scientist, Zotz dealt with the image of tourist destinations such as Tibet . Like Martin Brauen and Donald Sewell Lopez Jr. , she is one of the critics of Western ideas of Tibet in the sense of Edward Said's Orientalism thesis . She stated: “The fact that, according to a widespread cliché, there should be no enlightenment, modernity or technology for Tibetans to this day, cannot only be ascribed to the historical development of the image of Tibet, but must also arise from a present need. Do Tibetans have to remain in the Middle Ages for the Western imagination in order to keep an escape route from the modern era open? ”She also carried out a tourist study on the image of the Waldviertel .

further activities

Zotz is president of the intercultural institution Komyoji , member of the board of directors of the cultural publisher Kairos Edition in Luxembourg and lecturer at the International College of Tourism and Management in Bad Vöslau. Birgit Zotz is also the editor of Damaru magazine . As the wife of the philosopher Volker Zotz , she is, as he writes, involved in the creation of his works. Birgit Zotz has been the editor-in-chief of the magazine Der Kreis, founded in 1956, since 2015 . She is a senior member of the Lama and Li Gotami Govinda Foundation , and she is the curator of exhibitions such as the 2016 Tibet Saxon .
