Martin Brauen (born March 15, 1948 in Bern ) is a Swiss ethnologist and curator .

Life

Martin Brauen studied ethnology and religious history at the University of Zurich and Buddhology at the University of Delhi . He received his doctorate in Zurich with a dissertation on festivals and ceremonies in Ladakh . Since 1975 he has been head of the Himalaya / Far East department at the Zurich Ethnographic Museum and as a private lecturer at the University of Zurich. From 2008 to 2012 he was chief curator of the Rubin Museum of Art in New York.

Brauen is married to the Tibetan artist Sonam Dolma Brauen ; the actress Yangzom Brauen is their daughter, the artist Tashi Brauen their son.

His great-grandfather was Elie Ducommun , a Nobel Peace Prize winner , a liberal journalist, entrepreneur and State Chancellor in Geneva.
