life and work

Tunakan was born in Vienna to Turkish parents, but also lived in Salzburg for eight years during his school days , where his father was busy building the new Mozarteum .

From the mid-1980s he worked as a DJ . He made his first appearance in 1986 in the Vienna Club Atrium. From 1988 was responsible for the distribution of records as an employee of Dum Dum Records. From the 1990s on he wrote some film scores before founding the Cheap Records label with Patrick Pulsinger in 1993 . Artists such as Christopher Just , Robert Hood , Gerhard Potuznik , Kentolevi , Sluta Leta , Louie Austen and Khan published on it . Up to 20,000 of the most successful records were sold, most of them abroad. While Pulsinger was mainly responsible for the music production, Tunakan represented the label externally and managed the business processes.

From 1993 Tunakan's own productions appeared, often in collaboration with Pulsinger, Potuznik and other musicians, under changing project names such as The Private Lightning Six , Sluts'n'Strings & 909 , Restaurant Tracks , Dean & Deluca , Showroom Recordings or Los Modernistas .

In 2000 Tunakan and Pulsinger were awarded the Austrian Music Promotion Prize.

Since Patrick Pulsinger left Cheap Records in 2003, Tunakan has continued to run the label alone. In 2008 he founded the sub-label Cheap Rec. Rocks, which acts as a platform for 60s mod and ska music.
