Jörg Engels

Jörg Engels (born July 5, 1968 in Osnabrück ) is a German jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn ).

Live and act

Engels won several prizes at the Jugend musiziert classical music competition . He discovered jazz at the age of 13 and played in groups in the Osnabrück area. From 1986 to 1988 he was a soloist in the Landesjugendjazzorchester Hessen; from 1988 to 1993 he played in Bujazzo under Peter Herbolzheimer . After an apprenticeship as a sheet metal worker , he studied at the Hilversum Conservatory with Rob Madna and Ack van Rooyen .

Engels was part of Karlheinz Stockhausen's ensemble from 1994 to 1997 and was involved in the world premiere of the opera Thursday from the Light Cycle. He also interpreted works by the composers Yann Diederichs and Alessandro Melchiorre . In the field of jazz he worked with Peter Herbolzheimer, Bobby Burgess , the Sunday Night Orchestra and Peter Fleischhauer's King of Swing Orchestra . With Paul Heller he led the group Interception (with Kris Goessens , Ingmar Heller and John Hollenbeck ) and recorded the album Kaleidoscope ( Mons Records 1996). Bob Brookmeyer brought him to his New Art Orchestra in 1994 , to which he was a member until 1998 ( New Works Celebration Challenge Records 1999). With the hr big band he recorded their album Libertango ( Prize of the German Record Critics 2004). Between 2004 and 2006 he was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra , with whom he recorded the album Big Band Poesie ( EmArcy 2004). He was also involved in the GHO Orchestra's album Hermannology (2011) by Gerd Hermann Ortler . There were also projects with John Clayton , Milt Jackson , Cedar Walton , Jeff Hamilton , Michael Brecker , Clark Terry , Ernie Watts , Bastian Stein and Dianne Reeves .

Engels has been teaching as a professor at the Music and Art University of the City of Vienna since 2004 .
