Kris Goessens

Kris Goessens (* 1967 in Aalst ; † August 21, 2013 ) was a Belgian jazz pianist and composer .

Goessens first learned the organ and French horn as a child , before switching to the piano at seventeen when he discovered jazz for himself . After taking courses with Rob Madna , Erik Vermeulen , Rob van Kreeveld , Hein van de Geyn , Joe Lovano and Richie Beirach , he moved to the Netherlands in 1988 , where he studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music , piano with Rob van Kreeveld and composition with Bob Brookmeyer . After graduation in 1994, he received a scholarship the following year, which in 1996/97 gave him a New York scholarship-Stay during which he took lessons from Kenny Werner , Gary Peacock , Jim McNeely and Richie Beirach. He has also performed with Lee Konitz , Adam Nussbaum , Jim Hall , Mike Mainieri , Mads Vinding and Joe Lovano.

In 1993 he began working with Bob Brookmeyer in the form of a series of duo concerts in Paris, where live recordings were made for French radio. He also worked with the trombonist in his New Quartet with drummer Dré Pallemaerts and bassist Riccardo Del Fra ; the album Paris Suite received the Prix ​​du meilleur disque de l'annee of the Académie du Jazz . Goessens also played in Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra , which made recordings with guest soloists such as Gerry Mulligan , Clark Terry , Michael Brecker and Joe Lovano; he also worked with Brookmeyer in the Metropole Orkest . His compositions were recorded for the radio in an arrangement by Brookmeyer with Kris Goessens on piano. Kris Goessens also played with Kurt Van Herck ( Another Day, Another Dollar ), in the ClazzEnsemble of Gerard Kleijn and Dick de Graaf , in the group Interception (with Paul Heller and Jörg Engels ) and from 2009 in his own trio (with Hein van de Geyn and Matthieu Chazerenc ) and in the quintet A 'l improviste (with Jasper Blom , Joris Roelofs , Clemens van der Veen and Joost Lijbaart ). In the field of jazz he was involved in nine recording sessions between 1994 and 2011, apart from the aforementioned with Pieter de Mast and Sal La Rocca . Kris Goessens taught piano, music theory , composition / improvisation at the Rotterdam Conservatory and also at the Amsterdam Conservatory . His students include u. a. Par Lammers .

Kris Goessens died on August 21, 2013. He committed suicide .
