Joost Lijbaart
Joost Lijbaart (born September 25, 1967 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch jazz drummer .
Life
After taking lessons in classical drums, Lijbaart studied at the Hilversum Conservatory from 1986 to 1991 with Cees Kranenburg , Marcel Serierse and Gerhard Jeltes . During this time in Senegal he also studied African percussion ( Doudou N'Diaye Rose ). In 1990 he performed percussion music by Iannis Xenakis , John Cage and Steve Reich with students at the National Ballet Academy . In the field of new music he also worked with Theo Loevendie and Louis Andriessen .
In 1989 Lijbaart founded a trio with Yuri Honing that was later expanded to form the Orient Express group . As a member of the Nicolas Thys Trio , he was honored as the best drummer at the 15th European Jazz Competition in 1993. In 1995 he became a member of the Michiel Borstlap Sextet (with Yuri Honing, Eric Vloeimans and Benjamin Herman ), with whom he toured China in 1998, and of the Agog trio (with Frank Wingold and Mark Haanstra ). Together with Yuri Honing, Michiel Borstlap and Boudewijn Lucas , he founded the jazz rock group White House in 1996 .
In 2002 Lijbaart founded the Group of Friends with Yuri Honing, Benjamin Herman and Mats Eilertsen , which took part in the North Sea Jazz Festival the following year ; the concert was recorded in 2005. With the choreographer Anouk van Dijk , he realized a live project in 2003 for four dancers and four musicians.
With the group Yuri Honing Wired Paradise (with Yuri Honing, Tony Overwater and Frank Möbus ) he released the album Temptation in 2006 . In a duo with the pianist Wolfert Brederode , Lijbaart recorded the album One and realized a project with the dancer and choreographer Lonneke van Leth . He has been working in the trio Under the Surface since 2017 with the guitarist Bram Stadhouders and the singer Sanne Rambags (album of the same name in 2017 on Challenge Records ).
