Tony Overwater (born March 24, 1964 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch bassist and composer of jazz and improvising music.

Live and act

While still a student at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Overwater received the SJIN (Dutch Jazz Foundation) Podium Prize for young jazz musicians in 1989. He toured Europe with Sunny Murray and David Murray and became a member of the tenor saxophonist Yuri Honing's trio , in which he appeared in 2008 (e.g. album "Over the Rainbow" 1998, from the Dopsgezinde Kirk in Amsterdam). He plays with his own "Tony Overwater Group" and also performs solo. By 2015 he had released ten CDs under his own name. In 2005 his trio (with tenor saxophonist Maarten Ornstein and drummer Wim Kegel ) recorded the Duke Ellington Suites “The River” and “Far East Suite” with the “Calefax Reed Quintet” , arranged by Overwater. He also worked with Ack van Rooyen , Misha Mengelberg , Paolo Fresu , Dave Burrell , Sylvie Courvoisier , Michel Godard , Gilbert Paeffgen , Karin Hammar , Hermine Deurloo , Michiel Braams Flex Bent Braam and Rembrandt Frerichs .

He also writes music for documentaries and dance pieces.

In 2001 he received the Edison Award for the album "Op" with his band . In 2002 he was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize .
