Wim Kegel

Wim Kegel (born December 8, 1967 in The Hague ) is a Dutch jazz musician ( drums , composition ). In his playing he combines traditional approaches to jazz drums with a progressive, contemporary and personal approach.

Live and act

Kegel started playing the drums at the age of six. After instruction from his father Nico Kegel and his first drum teacher Paul van der Vossen, he moved to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague at the age of 15 , where he took part in a special course for young talents. He then studied at the Conservatory with Henk van den Berg, but also with Ack van Rooyen and Frans Elsen and graduated in 1991 with honors. In 1994 and 1996 he was able to deepen his knowledge in New York and Boston with Joe Morello , Bob Moses and Jamey Haddad with a grant from the Fonds voor de Podiumkunsten .

Kegel performed across Europe as a teenager. With the Supreme Headquarters group , Kegel won first prize at the NOS Jazz Contest in 1989 for the best group. The album OP , on which he played with Maarten Ornstein , Ack van Rooyen, Ernst Reijseger and Tony Overwater , received an Edison in 2001 . He then worked with Ad Colen, Heleen Schuttevaêr, Tine Schneider , Udo van Boven / Philip Harper 4tet, Contraband and Major League .

Kegel has also performed with Michael Brecker , Pat Metheny (at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2004), Bob Berg , Sunny Murray , Bob Brookmeyer , Clark Terry , Johnny Griffin , Ferdinand Povel and George Duke . He has recorded more than 40 albums with musicians such as David Liebman , Bob and Chuck Findley , Ron McCroby, David Schnitter , Jeroen Manders, Mark Alban Lotz , Hans Mantel, the group Special Delivery , Tilmar Junius and the Down Town Jazz Band . His quartet includes Jamy Westerveld, Jasper Lekkerkerk and Marco van Os.
