Mark Alban Lotz

Mark Alban Lotz (born June 12, 1963 in Tübingen ) is a German jazz flutist .

Mark Alban Lotz is the son of jazz historian Rainer Lotz . He grew up in Berlin , Thailand and Uganda before attending the Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium Bonn-Bad Godesberg until graduating in 1983 . During this time he took flute lessons from Michael Heupel . After completing his community service , he first studied ethnology and musicology in Berlin until 1986, and then studied jazz flute with Ferdinand Povel at the Hilversum Conservatory until 1991 . He also took private lessons from James Newton and Hubert Laws . This was followed by studies in classical music at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten with Jos Zwaanenburg.

Since 1988 he has led the Albanism Quartet (with Michiel Borstlap ), with whom he reached the finals at the jazz competition in Karlsbad in 1989 . Since the 1990s he has worked in the Dutch jazz scene a. a. with Gijs Hendriks , Tjitze Vogel and Meinrad Kneer . With the clarinetist Maarten Ornstein and the drummer Stefan Kruger, he founded his ensemble Lotz of Music , which still exists today (2016) in 1991 ; In 1994 Laika Records released his first album Puasong Daffriek , in 1995 he recorded the music for Rolf Orthel's documentary Antartica - a Ticket to Eternity .

Since 1997 Lotz has initiated cross-overs with Cuban, Moldavian, West African, Turkish, Indian music and worked with fine arts noisiVision with Elselien van der Graaf and video art (VJ Soundshadow) . From 2002 composition commissions for various ensembles such as the string quartet Zapp4 or the piano trio Traveling Light . 2003 collaboration with Dj Cycle (Erik van Putten) in Afro Lounge , a cross-over of house music with Afro-Cuban music. In 2004, the collaboration with theater director Eric de Vroedt in the Soapera led to the pendant La Nuit , of which the CD of the same name was published. He plays in projects with Tony Overwater , Michael Moore , Michael Baird , Alan Laurillard , Estrella Acosta, Raj Mohan, Wouter Hamel , Don Byron , Giovanca Ostiana, Sandhya Sanjana, Rogier Telderman , Kamil Erdem, Claudio Puntin , Mehmet Polat, Chris Potter ( Saxophonist) as well as with musicians from Senegal to Moldova. Since 2002 he has belonged to the Global Village Orchestra and was also involved in its albums. In 1997 he went to Havana with Cuban musicians, and in 2011 he went to the studio with Turkish musicians in Istanbul several times.
