Sjahin During

Sjahin During (* 1972 in Amsterdam ) is a Turkish-Dutch percussionist who works primarily in the field of world music .

Live and act

During comes from a family of artists: his grandfather once directed the second violins at the Concertgebouw Orkest in Amsterdam, while his father works as a violin maker . His mother is a ceramist, one brother is an archaeologist and his younger brother is a gypsy jazz guitarist living in Italy . He spent the first years of his life in Istanbul , from the age of six he grew up in the Netherlands.

During has devoted himself to percussion music since his youth. He studied Latin and Afro-Cuban percussion, the rhythms of flamenco and the Orient and was taught by master drummers in Cuba and Turkey. He initiated numerous projects such as Yoruba Ilu, Bayuba Cante ( Cheba 2000) and TurCumstances . For his album Afro Anatolian Tales (2008) he teamed up with well-known musicians such as Aynur Doğan and Arto Tuncboyaciyan . In 2010 he founded the world jazz group Arifa with Franz von Chossy and Alex Simu , which released four albums. With Shishani Vranckx he explored the music of Namibia in Namibian Tales . He worked with Claron McFadden on the Night Shades: Aubergine project .

He also worked with the Asko / Schönberg Ensemble, Martin Fondse , Harmen Fraanje , Eric Vloeimans , Simon Phillips , Pedro Luis Ferrer , Naseer Shamma , Mola Sylla , Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui , Izaline Calister , Theodosii Spassov and other artists.
