Franz von Chossy

Franz von Chossy (* 1979 in Munich ) is a German jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Live and act

Chossy grew up in Munich; He played the piano at an early age, but also saxophone and presented his first compositions. He completed his instrumental studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2006 with top marks. He then studied film composition at the Manhattan School of Music .

Chossy plays jazz with influences from classical music; "His excellent and effortlessly shifting improvisation skills between the genres" is emphasized. In his trio he works with Clemens van der Feen (bass) and Paul Wiltgen (drums). Together with Alex Simu and Sjahin During , he founded the world jazz band Arifa in 2010 . Their debut album Beyond Babylon was released that same year, followed by Anatolian Alchemy in 2012; Both albums were named “best world music release of the year” in the Netherlands and rated 5 stars in various specialist magazines. In collaboration with the Dutch poet Abra Bertman and his quintet, his suite When the World Comes Home was created . He entertained the duo SurhaXn with the flautist Josephine Bode . He can also be heard on albums by Matik , Sanne van Hek and Pascal Schumacher and has appeared with Marike van Dijk's quintet .

Prizes and awards

In 2004, the album "Fragments of Before", which Chossy released with the Yaniv Nachum Quartet , was named the best modern jazz album of the year by All About Jazz . In 2006 he won the Dutch Jazz Competition with his Franz von Chossy Trio and as a soloist . In 2009 he came second in the Solo Piano Jazz competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival .
