Sanne van Hek

Lisanne "Sanne" van Hek (born November 4, 1978 in Eindhoven ; † April 7, 2020 there ) was a Dutch jazz and improvisation musician ( trumpet ).

Live and act

Hek quit her training in classical music at an early age, playing bass and drums for a while, before learning the trumpet as a career changer at the age of 20. She studied at various conservatories in the Netherlands, the Manhattan School of Music and the Berklee College of Music . She played among others in the project electron by Michiel Borstlap and pursued their own projects.

In 2004 Hek released her debut album Ask mE latEr . In the same year she performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival with her trio, which included Frans van der Hoeven and John Engels . Then she founded the improvisation trio The Black Napkins with Jasper Stadhouders (guitar) and Gerri Jäger (drums), with whom she toured in 2009. She played with the live electronics engineer Koenraad Ecker in the duo Ecker / Van Hek, and with the quartet Stadhouders / Govaert / Cherrin / Van Hek. She also belonged to the sextet Gowk of the Belgian musician Teun Verbruggen . In 2012 she performed in an octet with u. a. David Kweksilber and Benoît Delbecq and in a trio with Shahzad Ismaily and Onno Govaert. She was also a member of the Magic Malik group ( Alternate Steps , 2012) and formed the duo SpermCurch with bassist Trevor Dunn . Van Hek developed the software herself, which she used for her music.

Prizes and awards

In 2003 Hek received the Dordtse Jazz Prijs. In 2010 she worked as an improviser in residence in Moers. In 2019 she won the ACT Award of the Eindhoven STRP Festival.
