Shahzad Ismaily is an American musician and composer of Pakistani descent. His main instrument is the electric bass . He is active in the fields of rock and jazz , u. a. in the vicinity of the New York downtown scene .

Live and act

Ismaily was born in the United States to Pakistani immigrants . He completed a master's degree in biochemistry from Arizona State University . He traveled extensively to learn the music of different cultures. He visited, for example, Pakistan, India , Turkey , Mexico , Japan , Indonesia , Morocco and Iceland .

He plays a variety of instruments, including a. Electric and double bass , guitar , banjo , accordion , flute , drums and electronic instruments such as Moog . He is a member of the bands Ceramic Dog by Marc Ribot and Secret Chiefs 3 and collaborated a. a. with Laurie Anderson , Lou Reed , John Zorn , Colin Stetson , Jolie Holland , Laura Veirs , Bonnie Prince Billy , Faun Fables , Elysian Fields , Shelley Hirsch , Will Oldham , Nels Cline , Bill Frisell , Guillermo E. Brown , Graham Haynes , David Krakauer and Billy Martin . He was involved in the project The Road to Jajouka , in which many well-known jazz and rock musicians dealt with the music of the Master Musicians of Jajouka .

Ismaily regularly composes for theater and musicals. He is the author of the soundtrack for the film Frozen River .

He runs a record label called 88 Records.
