description

Coris monspeliensis grows as a perennial herbaceous plant in the period from March to July and reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. In some cases, the ascending to upright stems of the earth pine can also lignify at their base. The alternately arranged, simple leaves are linear with a length of 3 to 12, rarely up to 20 millimeters and a width of 0.6 to 1.5, rarely up to 3 millimeters and can be hairy but also bald.

The flowering period in Spain extends from April to July. The annual inflorescence is almost spherical to ovoid with a diameter of 1 to 4, rarely up to 5 centimeters and a length of up to 11.5 centimeters and contains 10 to 30 flowers. The flowers have a double flower envelope . The mostly 6 to 8 (5 to 9) millimeter long sepals are fused. The blue-violet or pink corolla is 7 to, usually 10 to 12 millimeters long.

With a length of 0.5 to 1.5, rarely up to 2 millimeters, the capsule fruit is much shorter than the calyx and spherical.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18 or 56.

Occurrence

The earth pine occurs in the Mediterranean area. It thrives in garigues , especially on calcareous soils .
