Georg August Pritzel (born September 2, 1815 in Carolath in the province of Brandenburg (today's Siedlisko), † June 14, 1874 in Hornheim near Kiel ) was a Prussian, German librarian and botanical writer . His botanical author abbreviation is " Pritz. "

Live and act

Pritzel came from a poor background. He completed his studies in Breslau with the dissertation Anemonarum revisio , which appeared in the magazine Linnaea in 1841 . Pritzel then moved to Berlin in the hope of finding a job there that would suit his abilities. But it was not until 1851 that he was able to join the royal library as an unskilled worker and later became curator. From 1855 he also held the office of archivist at the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences . Pritzel suffered from a spinal cord disease that made his mood increasingly bitter until he died at the age of 59.

Georg A. Pritzel's main work is his bibliography Thesaurus litteraturae botanicae omnium gentium ... quindecim millia operum recensens on botanical literature from the origins in antiquity to its time, first published in 1851 . In addition to the German libraries, he also visited libraries in Vienna, Geneva, London and Paris to collect the works and registered around 40,000 botanical works. 1855–1866 his extensive work Iconum Botanicarum index locupletissimus appeared with an alphabetically arranged collection of illustrations of flowering plants and ferns from the botanical and garden literature of the 18th and 19th centuries. The work The People's Names of German Plants appeared posthumously in 1884 , in which 24,000 plant names are given.

Honors

In 1852 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

The plant genera Pritzelago Kuntze from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae), Pritzelia Walp. from the Araliaceae family are named after him.
