Carl Jessen
Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Jessen , also Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Jessen (born September 15, 1821 in Schleswig , † May 27, 1889 in Berlin ) was a Prussian , German botanist and university professor in Greifswald . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Jess. "
Life
Carl Jessen studied at Christian-Albrechts-Universität and had been a member of the Corps Saxonia Kiel since 1843 . In Kiel he was awarded Dr. phil. PhD . A little later he was employed as a lecturer in botany at the Royal State and Agricultural Academy Eldena , founded in 1835 . At the same time he qualified as a professor for botany at the Royal University of Greifswald . Appointed professor , he was accepted into the Kaiserlich Leopoldinisch-Carolinische Akademie in 1854 . In 1871 he took part in a Baltic Sea expedition equipped by the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture. When the academy in Eldena (Greifswald) was closed in 1877, Jessen moved to Berlin. He worked there as a writer and gave lectures at the Friedrich Wilhelms University . After a short illness, he died at the age of 68.
Carl Jessen married Mathilde Henriette Strumper (1820–1886). The couple had six children, three of whom died early. The son Carl (1857–1939) became a Privy Councilor and Building Officer in Bielefeld. Of the daughters, Amalie (1855–1943) married the lawyer Heinrich Otto Lehmann and Mathilde married the architect Carl Bauer.

In lectures he spoke about the natural laws of the fine arts , aesthetics as natural science and the physiology of the soul . In a lecture on the origin and persistence of living beings and in his book published in 1885, he turned against Darwin's teaching .
