Graham Haynes

Graham Brentley Haynes (born September 16, 1960 in Queens , New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( cornet , trumpet , composition ).

Haynes is the son of jazz drummer Roy Haynes , through whom he came into contact with great musicians at an early age. With his school friend Marcus Miller he gained his first musical experience in school bands, but then switched from the drum set to the trumpet, at the age of 16 to the cornet, which demanded a more lyrical playing. He had lessons from Dave Burns . During his time at Queens College (1977 to 1980) he first played in gospel groups . In 1979 he met the alto saxophonist Steve Coleman for the first time and played in his group. Together with Kim Clarke , Jean-Paul Bourelly , Cassandra Wilson and drummer Mark Johnson, the two wind players founded the band Five Elements , which initially played mainly on the streets, but enjoyed great success as the M-Base Collective in the late 1980s .

In 1987 he founded a. a. formed the band No Image with M-Base guitarist David Gilmore , but also frequently worked with John Zorn and Elliott Sharp . In early 1991 he was involved in the album David Murray Big Band Conducted by Lawrence "Butch" Morris . Then he went to Paris for three years , where he worked with African and Arab musicians on the one hand, but also played with Ed Blackwell , Don Byron , Nicolas Simion , Steve Williamson and Rodney Kendrick . He released the two albums Nocturne Parisian (1992) and The Griot's Footsteps (1994). On his return to New York, he dealt with the thriving hip-hop scene and followed up with the album Transition with elements of rap and 1996 Tones For The 21st Century . On BPM he fused drum and bass beats with the music of Richard Wagner . Since then he has worked on multimedia projects, wrote film scores and taught at New York University .

Haynes also worked with Bill Dixon ( 17 Musicians in Search of a Sound: Darfur ), Me'shell Ndegeocello , Vernon Reid , The Roots , David Murray , George Adams , Uri Caine , Bheki Mseleku , Rod Williams and Bill Laswell's band project Arcana . In 2018 he is a member of the Vijay Iyer Sextet. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 202 recording sessions between 1985 and 2017, according to Tom Lord .
