Dave Burns

David "Dave" Burns (born March 5, 1924 in Perth Amboy , New Jersey , † April 5, 2009 in Freeport , New York ) was an American jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn ), arranger , composer and music teacher.

Life

Dave Burns began his career in 1942/43 with the Savoy Sultans ; during his military service 1943-45 he led an Air Force band. After his discharge from the army he played in Dizzy Gillespies Big Band until 1949 , then in the Duke Ellington Orchestra until 1952 and with James Moody until 1957 , to be heard on his albums Mood's Moods for Blues or Hi Fi Party . In 1957 he received a composition commission from the NAACP . After three years as a freelance musician, during which he a. a. the Blue Note album AT's Delight 1960 by Art Taylor was involved, he became in 1961 a member of the band of Billy Mitchell and Al Gray , during which time he recorded two albums in the hard bop -Idiom under his own name for Vanguard Records , on which u. a. Kenny Barron , Steve Davis , Otis "Candy" Finch , Bobby Hutcherson , Herbie Morgan , Billy Mitchell, and Harold Mabern performed .

In 1963 he went to Willie Bobo . In 1965/66 he worked as a studio musician for an NBC television show; from 1966 to 1968 he led a group with Bill English that performed at Minton's. From 1968 he also worked as a music teacher in schools as part of the International Art of Jazz program; he also taught at New York University.

Burns has also worked on recordings of Eddie Jefferson , Milt Jackson , Johnny Griffin , George Wallington and Dexter Gordon throughout his career ; he was stylistically strongly influenced by Gillespie and Clifford Brown , as arranger of Gil Fuller , Tadd Dameron and Quincy Jones .
