Pascal Schumacher (* 12. March 1979 in Luxembourg (city) ) is a Luxembourg jazz - vibraphone , - Composer and - bandleader .

Live and act

Schumacher first studied percussion at the Conservatory of Luxembourg City , later he specialized in mallet percussion (vibraphone, marimbaphone ...) at the Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg in the class of Emmanuel Séjourné . He completed this training phase in 2000 with the “Diplôme de Spécialisation Claviers”. At the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague he studied then jazz vibraphone. At the same time, he did a master's degree in musicology at the Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg . He took u. a. Lessons with Gary Burton , David Friedman , Franck Tortiller , Wolfgang Lackerschmid , Bart Quartier and Jean Geoffroy.

Since 1997 Pascal Schumacher has played in various combos such as Gasz3 and Chroma . In 2003 he founded the Pascal Schumacher Quartet (also spelled 4tet ), which initially consisted of Jef Neve on piano, Christophe Devisscher on double bass and Teun Verbruggen on drums; later, Franz von Chossy took on the piano and Jens Düppe took on the drums . He also played with Bruno Castellucci , Francesco Tristano , Kenny Barron , Marc Demuth , Rabih Abou-Khalil , Maxime Delpierre, Loren Stillman , Greg Lamy, Nathalie Loriers , Michael Wollny , Oliver Strauch , Florian Weber , Tineke Postma , Magic Malik , Erwin Vann , Henning Sieverts , Arash Safaian and Justin Faulkner.

With Jef Neve , Schumacher has had a duo project Face to Face since 2004 , which works on crossing borders between Claude Debussy , Steve Reich and Thelonious Monk . Schumacher is also constantly present as a composer and musician in the Luxembourg Philharmonic . Since 2001 Pascal Schumacher has also taught percussion at the Conservatory of Luxembourg City. From October 2010 to 2014 he taught jazz vibraphone at the University of Music in Saarbrücken .

He lives in Luxembourg and Brussels .

Prizes and awards

In 1999 Schumacher received the Prix ​​Norbert Stelmes of the “ Jeunesses Musicales Luxembourg ”. In August 2004 he and his quartet won first prize and the audience prize at the renowned European jazz competition Tremplin Jazz d ' Avignon . In November 2005 the quartet received the Belgian Django d'Or jazz prize in the “New Talents” category. In 2012 he was named “Instrumentalist of the Year” on the occasion of the album Bang My Can with the ECHO Jazz . The JTI Trier Jazz Award followed in 2013 .
