Pedro Luis Ferrer

Pedro Luis Ferrer Montes (born September 17, 1952 in Yaguajay , Sancti Spíritus , Cuba ) is a Cuban chansonist and, alongside Silvio Rodríguez and Pablo Milanés, one of the most important representatives of the Cuban Nueva Trova .

Born in 1952 in Yaguajay in the then Las Villas province , Pedro Luis Ferrer moved to Havana in 1965 , where he dared to take his first musical steps as an autodidact. In 1970 he became a professional musician. His music is based on the classical styles of guaracha , blended with newer Cuban styles to create the new trova . In the mid-1970s he recorded his first record, Pedro Luis Ferrer . This was followed by appearances in various countries, such as Poland , the GDR , the Scandinavian countries and also the USA .

With his socially critical and partly satirical texts, which trace the difficult situation of the Cuban population as well as the discrimination against political and social minorities, Ferrer drew the anger of the Cuban government. A prominent example of this is the song 100% Cuban from 1992, which is a parody of the government slogan of the same wording to be found on countless posters, but reflects the social reality of the periodo especial that is just beginning . His constant striving for social justice ultimately earned him a ban on performing in Cuba.

Ferrer's daughter Lena (* 1981) has been playing with him since she was 13 years old.
