In more modern varieties such as salsa , it is mostly replaced by the piano, which in its playing figure called montuno - not to be confused with the term Montuno - copies the characteristic accompanying figure of the Tres true to note . It arises from the fact that the central stringed Chor, tuned to the fundamental note of a chord, a unison forms the outer choruses with third and fifth contrast octave are doubled so that the fundamental tone is above and below plays around.

The tuning was originally on a D minor chord, but since Arsenio Rodríguez a C major triad has prevailed. Also transpositions thereof are cited as mood.

Strings for tuning in C: GG '(24/11), C'C' (14/14) and E'E (11/24). When tuning in D, thinner strings are used.
