Izaline Calister

Izaline Francisca Juanita Calister (born March 9, 1969 in Curaçao , Netherlands Antilles ) is a Dutch singer , composer and songwriter .

Live and act

Izaline Calister grew up on Curaçao and attended college there . In 1987 she went to the Netherlands, where she first studied administrative economics in Groningen and then music at the Prins Claus Conservatory .

After engagements in several Latin jazz ensembles , she was accepted as the successor to Angélique Kidjo in the Pili Pili project by Jasper van't Hof . She later sang with other groups, such as the German group Dissidents in the late 1990s , with whom she recorded the album Live in Europe .

In 2000 her first solo album Soño di un muhé (Dream of a Woman) was released. In her compositions she combines the rhythmic music of her homeland such as Tambú, Ritmo Kombina, Tumba and Muzik di Zumbi with elements of jazz . In an interview she stated that she was particularly inspired by the artists Richard Bona , Dianne Reeves , Cassandra Wilson and Elis Regina . She sings in her mother tongue Papiamentu .

In 2007 Miluska Rosalina directed the documentary Izaline Calister: Lady Sings the Tambú .

Izaline Calister lives in Groningen.
