Alan Purves

Alan "Gunga" Purves (born September 12, 1952 in Edinburgh ) is a British drummer and percussionist who lives in Amsterdam .

Live and act

Impressed by Gene Krupa , Purves started playing the drums at the age of 18 as an autodidact . With Jango Edwards he came to the Netherlands in 1975, where he worked intensively with self-made instruments. He played for the Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe and in jazz and rock bands as well as in Franky Douglas ' Sun Child and in a duo with Ernst Reijseger . In 1982 they released their joint album Cellotape & Scotchtape . In the next few years he was part of various bands from Han Buhrs and Sean Bergin , with whom he also recorded. In the 1990s he appeared with Peggy Larson, but also played in the Sun Ra tribute band Astronotes by Joost Buis and in the groups of Rajesh Mehta , Tristan Honsinger and Jodi Gilbert. In 1999 he performed works by John Zorn at a festival in Den Bosch .

Purves continued to play in a duo with the baritone saxophonist Ad Peijnenburg and Cor Fuhler . With Joost Buis and Wilbert de Joode he formed the trio Snap, Crackle & Pop . In the next few years he also played with Palickx , with Andy Bruce & The Rigidly Righteous and with Corrie van Binsbergen and in 2011 also appeared in a duo with Valentin Clastrier . With Reijseger he played the soundtrack for Werner Herzog's Ein nursorglicher Sohn (2009); he is also involved in Stefan Winter's “improvised opera” Der Kastanienbaum (2005). He has been working with flautist Mark Alban Lotz in the Global Village Orchestra since 2000 and in Lotz of Music since 2003 .
