Cor Fuhler

Cornelis "Cor" Fuhler (born July 3, 1964 in Barger-Oosterveld ; † July 19, 2020 in Turramurra near Sydney , Australia) was a Dutch , later Australian pianist , keyboardist and composer who lived in Sydney (Australia) since 2010. He was active in the field of jazz and experimental electroacoustic music . He worked with live electronics and also played instruments he designed himself, such as the keyoline , a violin with a keyboard.

Live and act

Fuhler received his first organ lessons at the age of 10, but changed instruments several times, which his teachers did not understand, so that as an instrumentalist he was initially largely self-taught . Between 1983 and 1989 he studied at the Sweelinck Conservatorium with Niko Langenhuijsen , and also took lessons with Misha Mengelberg . While still studying at the Amsterdam Conservatory, he founded a trio with bassist Jan Hans Berg and drummer Martin van Duynhoven and the chamber music quintet Wakker op Zee .

In 1990 he composed his sextet Canabina Canabina with trombonist Joost Buis , oboist Eduard Wesley (later replaced by Maud Sauer and clarinetist Ab Baars ), violinist Alison Isadora, synthesizer player Michiel Scheen and double bass player Jan Nijdam; The ensemble, with which he performed his own works, existed until 1996 under the name Carduelis Carduelis . In 1991 he formed the collaborative group Diftong with singers Han Buhrs , Wilbert de Joode and Michael Vatcher .

Fuhler played between 1994 and 1997 as a keyboard player in the fusion band of the brothers Bert and Jacques Palinckx , with whom he can be heard on several albums. In 1995 he founded the trio Fuhler / Bennink / de Joode , with whom he recorded the album Bellagram and the live CD Zilch in 1998 . For Wayang Detective , a shadow play for Javanese gamelan music and improvisation, he wrote the script and music in 1996. In 1999 he was commissioned by the Huis aan de Werf in Utrecht for the musical theater piece Olympicnic for electro-acoustic music, Super 8 film , shadow play and athletes, on which the drummer Steve Heather and the vocalist Jaap Blonk participated.

In 1999 Fuhler recorded the album 10 Songs in 62 Minutes and 23 Seconds with DJ Cor Blimey and His Pigeon . With his group Corkestra (with Ab Baars, Tobias Delius , Anne La Berge , Andy Moor , Nora Mulder , Wilbert de Joode, Tony Buck , Michael Vatcher) Fuhler recorded the album of the same name in 2004. In 2006 he brought together musicians in the group Het Kabinet who played instruments that had become obsolete, such as the straw violin ( Aleks Kolkowski ), the harmonium (Frank van Bommel), the lute (Jacq Palinckx) and glass harmonica (Michael Vatcher). For many years he was a pianist and electronics technician for the international improvisation ensemble MIMEO. He was also a member of the groups Astronotes , Aardvark , the Flatland Kings , the Trio Delius / Lovens / Fuhler and the gamelan ensemble Wido Sari . As a sideman he worked a. a. with Tristan Honsinger , George Lewis , Roswell Rudd , Otomo Yoshihide ( New Jazz Orchestra ), Jim Denley , Amanda Stewart , Evan Parker , Jim O'Rourke , Simon Nabatov , John Zorn , Bob Ostertag , Jon Rose , Ernst Reijseger , Peter van Bergen , Tobias Delius, I Wayan Sadra , Adama Dramé , Ikue Mori , Mark Feldman , Herr Seele , Jaap Blonk, Miya Masaoka and Frances-Marie Uitti .

After a research stay at the University of Sydney since 2013, Fuhler received his doctorate there in 2016 in composition. In 2017 he published his book Disperse and Display on modular composition strategies and advanced piano techniques . In addition to research, he began teaching at the Conservatorium of Music in Hobart and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music . In 2018, he accepted a position as senior lecturer in audio and creative media studies at the SAE Creative Media Institute in Sydney.

Fuhler died on July 19, 2020 in Turramurra near Sydney.
