Winter & winter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winter & Winter is an independent Munich record label , which is at home in jazz as well as classical and new music and generally pursues a cross-border concept.

General information about the label

Winter & Winter was founded in 1995 by Stefan Winter as the successor to the JMT (Jazz Music Today) label after he had sold the latter to Polydor KK (Japan). The label took over artists from JMT and also expanded the stylistic range by relying on productions from the fields of classical and new music as a second pillar. This step is similar to that of the Munich-based ECM label, which also started with jazz and finally created a new area ECM New Series for classical and new music. Compared to other labels, Winter & Winter has broadened its spectrum over time (films, audio books, etc.) and publishes recordings that bring together different styles of music ( Uri Caine is a particular exponent here ) or just one style of music difficult to categorize, such as some of the theme-based projects.

Winter & Winter usually only brings out one publication per month, which up to now could, however, consist of a CD box or a special edition comprising various media. Due to this limited release framework, not all of the label's artists can post their recordings as regularly as with larger labels; Musicians associated with the label such as Noël Akchoté and Fred Frith have released the majority of their records on other labels, Paul Motian has recorded a recording of his renowned trio on ECM.

Winter & Winter also became known for its cover design, instead of the usual plastic CD trays, cardboard is used throughout, the design comes from a few regular designers. The rights to the recordings by JMT were reacquired by Stefan Winter and formed the basis for the JMT Edition, in which all recordings were re-released remastered over a period of three years.

Editions

Each recording of the label is part of a specific edition:

  • Music Edition - recordings from the fields of jazz, classical and new music
  • JMT Edition - all recordings of the previous label remastered
  • Audio film - topic-based projects (countries, cities, musical styles and composers, establishments, etc.)
  • Film Edition - film projects with a strong connection to music
  • Literature Edition - Audiobooks

In the early years of the label there was still a division into a Basic (up to and including the 20th century), New (contemporary) and Artist Edition (improvised music).

Well-known artists with at least three publications

With at least three re-releases within the JMT edition:

All three started their careers at JMT before moving to other labels.
