Valentin Clastrier (* 1947 in Nice ) is a French improvising musician, he plays electro-acoustic alto hurdy-gurdy and lives in Ennordres in the Cher département .

life and work

Clastrier played from 1968 to 1969 in the musical Der Mann von La Mancha ( L'Homme de la Mancha ), with Jacques Brel in the title role, and around 1970 for several years with the French singer and music comedian Ricet Barrier .

The musician with classical training on the trumpet switched to the hurdy-gurdy around 1970. In doing so, he approached the instrument without using the traditional repertoire usually associated with the hurdy-gurdy in France. In 1987 he became "the other hurdy-gurdy player"; Together with the instrument maker Denis Siorat , he worked on a significant further development of the hurdy-gurdy. Since 2006 Clastrier has been developing another prototype with Wolfgang Weichselbaumer . The new instrument opens up completely new possibilities in sound dynamics and playing technique, especially in the acoustic area.

His early music was shaped by Asian influences ( La vielle à roue de l'imaginaire , 1982 - Grand Prix du Disque of the Académie Charles-Cros ) and developed towards more experimental sounds ( Hérésie , 1992). Clastrier primarily combines the playing technique of the hurdy-gurdy with elements of jazz .

In his book La vielle & l'univers de l'infinie roue-archet , he develops a new perspective on the hurdy-gurdy, he describes his technique of the keyboard and the line or the right hand, as well as a writing system for complete notation. This “non-methodical method” is the result of many years of development, while the Clastrier, in contact with contemporary music (for example by Olivier Messiaen ), developed a new practice of the instrument.

Thanks to his virtuosity and technical innovations, Valentin Clastrier is now considered the undisputed master of the instrument. Since 1984 he has been the holder of the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres order awarded by the French Ministry of Culture .
