Lydia van Dam

Lydia van Dam (* 1970 ) is a Dutch jazz singer .

Dam comes from a family of musicians: her father was an organist in a church, her sister a classical singer. She received classical music lessons ( recorder , piano ) and sang in the choir. She came to jazz through Joni Mitchell and Al Jarreau . Then she completed her jazz training at the Hilversum Conservatory , where she studied with Jerry van Rooyen , Marjorie Barnes, Greetje Kauffeld , Deborah Brown and Gé Titulaer. During her studies, she performed with well-known orchestras, including the WDR Big Band , the Skymasters and the Metropole Orkest ; she toured Europe and Japan for two years with the Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of Wil Salden .

Her debut album, called Evidence , was released in 1995. In the same year the Hilversum Conservatory was invited to participate in a compilation album of the International Association of Jazz Educators , which was released on the BMG label ; van Dam's title Starjive was chosen as a contribution to the CD Talking Notes .

Since 1999 she has performed various programs with the Lydia van Dam Group, including Both Sides Now - Lydia van Dam sings Joni Mitchell , which are also documented as an album. She was also successful as a singer in the music theater productions RESPEECT and Lennon en McCartney . She toured India with Hans Mantel, Berend van den Berg, John Engels and Bart van Lier . In addition, she performed with the GUB Trio in Germany, which the pianist Dieter Greifenberg formed with bassist Paul G. Ulrich (later Konstantin Wienstroer ) and drummer Peter Baumgartner. In 2006 van Dam set texts by Karel Eykman to music together with Jeroen Zijlstra and Rutger Molenkamp ; the album Zijlstra Zingt Eykman was created: Zonder Liefde Ben Je Nergens

In 2008 she toured with Gerard van Maasakkers, Jeroen Zijlstra and Egon Kracht's band with the Dutch program Troost . In 2009 and 2010 she worked with Bert Lochs and his band. In 2012 she performed with Zijlstra in the Samen in Zee program . She was also active in the vocal septet Elysium and with Konrad Koselleck 's big band . Due to a vocal cord operation, she then concentrated on improvisational music. She can also be heard on the Woodhouse Jazzband's album Strike up the Band (2003) , with whom she also appeared in 2013 for the band's 60th anniversary.

She currently teaches jazz singing at the Conservatories of Amsterdam and Utrecht.
