Bart van Lier

Bart van Lier (* 14. June 1950 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch trombonist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Van Lier comes from a musical family (his father Cor van Lier worked as a trumpeter; his older brother is the bass trombonist Erik van Lier ). From the age of eight he played the cornet in the Loosdrecht fanfare Nieuw Leven and then switched to the trombone. At the age of 18 he became a member of the VARA Tanzorchester . During his studies in Hilversum he played with the Skymasters , the Ramblers and in orchestras under the direction of Tony Nolte and Rogier van Otterloo . From 1976 he worked at Cees Slinger . He later belonged to Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass and worked as a busy studio musician in the Netherlands . From 1992 until his retirement in 2017 he was the solo trombonist of the Metropole Orkest , with which he can be heard on many records and with guest soloists such as Al Jarreau , Zoot Sims and Toots Thielemans . He also played in the Cubop orchestra Nueva Manteca , directed the trombone quartet Bart's Bones , his own trio and (together with his student Ilja Reijngoud) a quintet. He can be heard as a soloist on the albums Akili, First Brass, Bart's Bones, Twilight, Memories of the Future, Live at the Tor and High Slide, Low Blow . He is also involved in albums by Rein de Graaff and Masha Bijlsma .

Van Lier taught at various conservatories in Germany and the Netherlands. He is the author of the 1994 textbook Coordination Training Program for Trombone Play , which has been translated into five languages. In the same year a signature trombone from Kühnl & Hoyer came onto the market.

Prizes and awards

In 2000 van Lier was honored with the Jazz in Duketown Award . In 2015 he received the ITA Award , which the International Trombone Association gives annually to a person who has made an exceptionally large contribution or has a lot of influence in the world of the trombone. Because of his international merits as a musician and teacher, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion in 2017 .
