Ulrich von Ramschwag (in ancient writings of Ramswag * 1265 , † 1291 ) was one of Rudolf I of Habsburg inserted Reich Vogt in the Abbey of St. Gall . He belonged to the von Ramschwag family .

history

Rudolf viewed the prince abbey as the bailiwick of Habsburg and tried to restrict the abbot's influence even before he was elected king. Over the past three hundred years, St. Gallen had become an important political and economic center in the middle of the sphere of influence of the Counts of Habsburg . With the death of Abbot Berchtold von Falkenstein in 1272, an almost thirty-year period of armed conflict in the Princely Land began. First, two abbots, Ulrich von Güttingen and Heinrich von Wartenberg , were elected as successors for Berchtold . Both fought intensely and tried to get the other out of office by all means. The townspeople supported von Güttingen, who was also Rudolf's preferred candidate. Therefore the citizens accepted Rudolf as their patron and were rewarded with a feast .

However, they did not expect that as soon as Rudolf was elected king, he would try again to exercise his influence. Rudolf put Ulrich von Ramschwag as bailiff over the city and the monastery had to enfeoff him , which he disliked extremely.

When Wilhelm von Montfort became abbot in 1281 , the situation worsened. Wilhelm was a man of strong will, which he clearly revealed. This, in turn, displeased the king and he did everything possible to keep Ulrich loyal to himself and at the same time to discredit Wilhelm by supporting the lawsuit against him by all means. Eventually Wilhelm's abbot's seat was revoked and Rudolf appointed Konrad von Gundelfingen , who was a slave to him, as counter-abbot.

The situation for Ulrich changed suddenly when Rudolf died on July 15, 1291. Wilhelm von Montfort returned to the city and the citizens drove out the unpopular Vogt Ulrich von Ramschwag. He died that same year.
