Ulrich von Güttingen (* before 1272; † February 14, 1277 presumably in St. Gallen ) was abbot of the abbey of St. Gallen between 1272 and 1277 .

Life

Ulrich von Güttingen, like Rudolf von Güttingen, came from the Thurgau barons of the von Güttingen family . In 1272 he was elected abbot by the ministerials , mainly the citizens of the city of St. Gallen , because they did not agree with the election of Heinrich von Wartenberg . Ulrich drove his rival out of town, whereupon a warlike feud broke out between the two and their supporters . Ulrich sold the entire monastery treasure and several lands in order to finance the war. Initially, the citizens of the city, known as the people of God, trusted in the newly elected King Rudolf von Habsburg . He regarded the area of the monastery as an imperial bailiff and appointed Ulrich von Ramschwag, an unloved man whom the monastery had to mortgage . When Heinrich von Wartenberg died unexpectedly during the war, his supporters elected Rumo von Ramstein as the new abbot. Two abbots reigned in the abbey. The feud about the legality of the abbot's chair continued, albeit with less severity.

Ulrich died on February 14, 1277, a direct successor was not elected because Rumo was now accepted by both parties as a legitimate abbot.
