Heinrich von Wartenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich von Wartenberg († April 26, 1274, presumably in Arbon ) was the abbot of the prince abbey of St. Gallen from 1272 to 1274.

Heinrich came from the family of the Barons von Wartenberg from the Baar area on the upper Danube . He had initially been a priest on the island of Reichenau , but then moved to St. Gallen before Abbot Berchtold , to whom he was related, died. In the abbot election on June 14, 1272 he was elected abbot by the convent of the monastery. At the same time, however, the ministerials elected Ulrich von Güttingen as abbot. Ulrich had stronger supporters, which is why Heinrich was expelled. Bishop Eberhard von Konstanz granted refuge in Arbon on Lake Constance and Pope Gregor X sent Ludwig von Dillingen as a mediator to settle the dispute. While the feud between the two abbots was already taking on destructive proportions, Heinrich died unexpectedly on April 26, 1274. He is buried in the Gallus Chapel in Arbon, where Gallus , the founder of St. Gallen, last worked.
