The barons of Wartenberg were a south German noble family with the ancestral seat of Castle Wartenberg and Upper Castle Wartenberg on the Wartenberg near Geisingen .

history

Her descent from a local noble family of Geisingen is assumed, a Cuno von Gisingen is mentioned in 1085. After building a castle on the former Wartenberg volcano, they probably named themselves after this place.

In 1215 the brothers Konrad the Elder and Heinrich the Elder are named as their sons in 1242 H. et E (igelofus) juniores, filli sui, de Wartenberc . In 1273 Konrad von Wartenberg called himself Landgraf in the Baar . The best-known member of the family was probably the abbot of St. Gallen, Heinrich von Wartenberg .

The Wartenbergers were not servants of the Fürstenbergers as was sometimes assumed. Konrad von Wartenberg called himself Landgraf in der Baar in 1273 . The Counts of Sulz also had a share in the rule . In 1282, Count Hermann von Sulz left the Landgraviate of Baar to King Rudolf von Habsburg , who gave it to Count Heinrich von Fürstenberg . A Fürstenberger married into the von Wartenberg family. The Wartenberg family died out around 1302 in the main line.
