Wartenberg Castle

The Castle Wartenberg is the ruins of a hilltop castle on the 810  m above sea level. NHN high, wooded summit of the Wartenberg , the northernmost Hegau volcano, two kilometers west of the Baden-Württemberg town of Geisingen in the Tuttlingen district .

history

Wartenberg coat of arms

The complex was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Geisingen, who later named themselves " von Wartenberg " after this castle and were one of the most important noble families in the region. As the first member of this family, "Cono miles de Gisingen" was mentioned in a document on February 2, 1095. The Wartenberg's heraldic animal is a standing lion. It can still be found today in some local coats of arms in the area, such as von Geisingen (supplemented by the Fürstenberg eagle), Öfingen (district of Bad Dürrheim ), and Fürstenberg (district of Hüfingen ).

Why the small plant to ruin fell, is not clear. It may have been abandoned by its owners, as a new castle was built around 100 meters east of it on the mountain top in the 13th century. The "old castle" went off in the 15th century.

Count Heinrich von Fürstenberg married Verena, Countess of Freiburg, the daughter of Count Heinrich von Freiburg-Badenweiler and Anna von Wartenberg on March 29, 1307 . Wartenberg Castle came to the Fürstenbergers through them .

The Fürstenberg official, Baron von Lassolaye, had the “New Castle” demolished in 1780 and a pleasure palace built in its place . When Prince Joseph Maria Benedict von Fürstenberg (1758–1796) came to power in 1783, he bought the Wartenberg back and had a landscaped park built in the style of an English garden.
