Prince Joseph Maria Benedikt zu Fürstenberg

Joseph Maria Benedikt zu Fürstenberg-Stühlingen (born January 9, 1758 in Donaueschingen ; † June 24, 1796 there ) was the seventh reigning Prince of Fürstenberg .

Life

Joseph Maria Benedikt was the son of Prince Joseph Wenzel zu Fürstenberg and Maria Josepha von Waldburg-Scheer-Trauchburg. He studied at the University of Salzburg and the Knight Academy in Turin .

He took over the government in 1783 and immediately abolished the moral debauchery that had become common among his father. He also regulated the lives of his subjects with strict moral standards.

Unlike most of his ancestors, Joseph Maria did not hold any diplomatic, legal or military office.

The family urged Joseph Maria to marry to ensure continuity. On November 15, 1772, a marriage contract was signed that would connect him with Princess Maria Theresia, the daughter of Prince Alexander Ferdinand von Thurn und Taxis . In April 1776, however, Maria Theresa persuaded her father to cancel the marriage contract that had not yet been completed. On January 15, 1778, Joseph Maria married Maria Antonia von Hohenzollern-Hechingen , the daughter of Prince Josef Friedrich von Hohenzollern-Hechingen . The marriage remained childless.

The musician

Like his father, Joseph Maria was a music lover - he is described as a “talented piano player” and his wife as an “excellent soprano ”. The princely couple cultivated their father’s relationship with father and son Mozart . In 1784 the previous riding school in Donaueschingen was converted into a court theater with over 500 seats, where Mozart operas were also performed.
