Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Alexander von Prussia (born June 21, 1820 in Berlin ; † January 4, 1896 there ) was a Prussian general of the infantry .

Life

origin

Alexander was the eldest son of Friedrich von Prussia (1794–1863) and Wilhelmine Luise Princess von Anhalt-Bernburg (1799–1882). His brother was George of Prussia . In the house of his father, who lived in the Jägerhof Palace as a division commander in Düsseldorf , he received an education from the private teacher Hermann Altgelt .

Military career

Like all princes of the royal house, he was employed as a second lieutenant in the Prussian army at the age of ten , but without initially doing any active service. As a colonel , Alexander was the first commander of the III. Battalions of the 1st Guard Landwehr Regiment. He rose further within the army until he was finally promoted to general of the infantry on June 25, 1864. In the meantime, Alexander had received the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Stephen on December 23, 1852 and was knighted on August 25, 1860 as a Knight of the Order of Hubert . In addition, King Wilhelm I appointed him chief of Infantry Regiment No. 16 on October 18, 1861 .

Alexander took part in the German War in 1866 and in the war against France in 1870/71 . Since January 1, 1873 he was the second chief of the 2nd Guards Grenadier Landwehr Regiment.
