Mark Haanstra

Mark Haanstra (* 1974 ) is a Dutch jazz bassist .

Haanstra began classical piano training at the age of six before switching to bass. He studied until 1997 at the Hilversum Conservatory double bass and bass guitar, and attended the Conservatory of Amsterdam from 1995 to 1999 the composition and improvisation course Contemporary Music trough Non-Western Techniques of Rafael Reina . In 2004 he finally studied with Pandit Hindraj Divekar in Pune, India.

He won several jazz competitions, including in 1994 with the Nemesis Quartet , in 1998 with the Geel group and in 2002 with Agog (with Frank Wingold and Joost Lijbaart ) the Nederlandse Jazz Concours . Furthermore, he is u. a. Member of the groups Mosaic (with Oene van Geel , Tobias Klein and Wiek Hijmans ), Odds-On , TONK and Interval Chamber . With Oene van Geel he founded the Oxymore Quintet (with Harmen Fraanje , Guillaume Orti and Chander Sardjoe ), and he also leads the group Bhedam .

Haanstra performed across Europe, the United States and South America, North Africa and India. From 2006-07 he toured with the Amsterdam Percussion Group and percussionist Terry Bozzio . In 2007 Giel Vleggaar composed the piece Atomic UFO saves the day (again) for him and the Nieuw Ensemble . a. performed at November Music and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival . In 2008 he performed with Steven Mackey and his rock group DERT in New York. He also worked with Yuri Honing , Simon Phillips , Terry Bozzio, Napoleon Murphy Brock , Theo Loevendie , Jam de la Crème, Windkracht 7 and is a member of Katharina Thomsens MaxSax .

In the field of new music, Haanstra u. a. together with the Asko Schönberg Ensemble . He performed with The North Netherlands Orchestra in a program with singer Ellen ten Damme and with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Mariss Jansons . In total he worked on more than thirty CD recordings. Since 2004 he has been teaching bass guitar and ensemble playing at the Groningen Conservatory .
