Rafael Reina (* 1961 in Equatorial Guinea ) is a Dutch composer .

Life

Raina came to Madrid at the age of seven, where he studied bass guitar and harmony with Eduardo Medina and David Thomas , among other things . In 1984 he completed his composition studies at Berklee College of Music , summa cum laude . He took special courses in film music and jazz here and attended private classes from Thomas McGah and John Bavicci . He then took lessons from Mauricio Kagel , Johannes Fritsch and José Luis de Delás in Cologne.

In Spain he composed ballet music, a. a. El cielo protector for Marco Berriel and Joaquín Cortés for the 1992 World Exhibition in Seville. In 1993 he moved to Amsterdam. At the same time he studied classical South Indian music ( Carnatic music ) with Jahnavi Jayaprakasch and NG Ravi while traveling to Bangalore . This resulted in the study program Contemporary Music Through Non-Western Techniques , which he offers at the Amsterdam Conservatory .

His opera Wölfli, a jouney in the chaos (based on Adolf Wölfli's book Von der Wiege bis zum Graab ), which premiered in 1999 under the direction of Petra Weimer , was created in collaboration between Interval Chamber Amsterdam and the Healing Theater Cologne . In compositions like Drag on ... Claustrophobia he worked with concepts of carnatic music and instead of a tempered mood of occidental music used a quarter tone system .

In 2004 he participated in the collective opera project 1714 Mon de Guerres des Festival de Peralada and the Barcelona Forum 2004 . In connection with the Amsterdam Axyz Ensemble and the Stuttgart Theater Rampe , the opera HesseIndia was created about the writer Hermann Hesse , which premiered in Vienna in 2007.
