Gerd Hermann Ortler

Gerd Hermann Ortler (* 1983 in South Tyrol ) is an Italian jazz musician (saxophone), conductor and composer.

Live and act

Ortler comes from a musical family; his grandfather was Kapellmeister in Glurns and his first musical teacher. Later he received lessons from Andreas Cappello in piano and Hans Tutzer in saxophone. He studied saxophone at the Vienna Conservatory , as well as composition and arrangement at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Ed Partyka . He also received composition lessons from Bob Brookmeyer .

Ortler founded the GHO Orchestra , which performs many of his cross-genre compositions and consists of musicians from the European jazz scene as well as instrumentalists from classical orchestras. In 2011 the debut album Hermannology was released , which he recorded with the 23-member ensemble. Ortler's “Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Chamber Ensemble” was premiered at Porgy & Bess in Vienna with Wolfgang Puschnig as the soloist. Ortler also wrote arrangements and compositions for the Metropole Orchestra , the Frankfurt Radio Big Band and Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Vienna Trombone Ensemble, Partyka Brass, Jazzwerkstatt Wien, Lucerne Jazz Orchestra and Phil-Blech. He also composed a hymn for the 30th anniversary of the Alto Adige Jazz Festival in South Tyrol, which was premiered by Paolo Fresu , Hamilton de Holanda , Nils Wogram and Jim Black . In 2014 his work “Stained Glass”, a concertino commissioned by the Wiener Konzerthaus for Joshua Redman , Aaron Goldberg and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra , premiered. He was also a member of the Klaus Telfser Quartet ( Promenade , 2009).

Ortler has been teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 2012 . He teaches composition and arrangement, structure analysis and ensemble management.

Prizes and awards

Ortler was twice with the Student Music Award of the Down Beat Award (2010 as "Winner", 2012 for "Outstanding Performance"). He also received a scholarship for talented students from the city of Graz and a state scholarship for composition (2011) from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture .
