Terrence Ngassa

Terrence Ngassa (born November 15, 1974 in Bamenda ) is a Cameroonian jazz musician ( trumpet , vocals ).

Ngassa, who comes from a family of musicians (his father was solo trumpeter in the national orchestra of Cameroon), was introduced to music very early on. From 1990 to high school in 1993, he was a member of the college band of the Yaoundé state high school, which he also led in the end. Then he founded the medium Jazz Quintet , with which he participated in 1993 at Jazz sous les manguiers , the Yaoundé International Jazz Festival, and was recognized as the best newcomer group. He began to study history at the university, but continued to perform in jazz. At the Yaoundé jazz festival from 1994 onwards he received several awards as the best trumpeter in Cameroon.

During his military service he was given the opportunity to study music theory . He then studied with Manfred Schoof from 2000 on a DAAD scholarship at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and also became a member of the Europe Africa Jazz Orchestra under the direction of François Jeanneau . In 2002 he received the jazz prize of the city of Cologne.

With his Terrence Ngassa Band , with whom he released two albums under his own name, he performed nationally. He also played as a soloist in Jasper van't Hof's Pili Pili and the bands of Paul Kuhn and Willy Ketzer .
