Werner Jackstädt (born January 24, 1925 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal), † March 19, 2005 in Wuppertal ) was a German entrepreneur , patron and founder of Dr. Werner Jackstädt Foundation .

Life

Werner Jackstädt was the son of the owner of a fine paper wholesaler in Wuppertal. He spent his time as a volunteer in a Belgian paper mill before being called up for military service in 1943 . In 1947 he returned from a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp and joined his father's company. In 1949, in the basement of this company, he and three employees produced the first self-adhesive postcards . In the 1950s, shortly after export had started, Werner Jackstädt dissolved his father's paper wholesaler and decided to concentrate on self-adhesive papers and foils.

Werner Jackstädt founded the first foreign location in Paris in 1959 . Over the years, a group of companies with a total of ten factories in Germany , France , Malaysia , Australia , South Africa , Brazil , Mexico , Colombia and Canada emerged . The headquarters of Jackstädt GmbH continued to be based in Wuppertal, the German production facility was located on the Schwelm city ​​limits to Wuppertal. The Jac trademark had a high international reputation; in 2001 the group employed 2100 people worldwide and achieved sales of around 1.2 billion German marks . When his strength decreased due to illness, Jackstädt decided to sell his group of companies to the American Avery Dennison Corporation . The sale was approved by the Cartel Office in May 2002 .

Werner Jackstädt had no heirs, so he and his wife Lore brought about 130 million euros of start-up capital to the non-profit Dr. Werner Jackstädt Foundation . In the first years of the foundation's existence, Werner Jackstädt shaped the task of the foundation through three goals that are to be promoted: in medicine, cancer and ophthalmology , in science, business administration and in the city of Wuppertal culture , theater , museums , and monument preservation and social engagement.

After Werner Jackstädt's death in March 2005, Lore Jackstädt continued her husband's duties and assumed the chairmanship of the Jackstädt Foundation. After her death in January 2019, Rolf-Peter Rosenthal took over the chairmanship of the foundation. The foundation's important funding projects include the Nordbahntrasse and the junior university in Wuppertal.

On December 15, 2014, the city council of Wuppertal decided to rename the northern railway line to Dr.-Werner-Jackstädt-Weg.

Honors

The International Self-Printing Association selected Werner Jackstädt as Man of the Year in 1994 . In 1995 he received the title of honorary doctor of economics from the University of Witten / Herdecke . The council of the city of Wuppertal decided on February 28, 2005 to award the ring of honor of the city of Wuppertal to Jackstädt, who, however, died before the handover ceremony.
