from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dr. Werner Jackstädt Foundation is an independent, non-profit foundation based in Wuppertal . It was founded in 2002 by the entrepreneur Werner Jackstädt, who died a few years later, with start-up capital of almost 130 million euros, and began operations in 2003. At the end of 2013, the assets were around EUR 200 million.

aims

The foundation's assets primarily relate to the fields of medicine , economic research and teaching, culture and welfare . A separate board of trustees has been established for each of these areas to advise on the allocation and amount of funding. Since its establishment until 2014, around 550 projects and institutions have received around 50 million euros in funding.

Foundation structure

The board consists of the highest administrative and decision-making body of the foundation. This committee decides on the allocation and distribution of the funds. The committee has the following members:

  • Rolf-Peter Rosenthal (former member of the executive board of Deutsche Bank AG Region West), chairman
  • Marc Chancellor
  • Michaela Steffen
  • Jörg Chancellor

There is also a board of trustees for each of the funding areas, which consists of three to five members who are in turn appointed for four years. In particular, the boards of trustees process the applications received and discuss the award of funding. However, they only have a recommendatory function towards the board of directors; the final decision is incumbent on the board of directors.

Field of medicine

In the field of medicine, scientific projects in ophthalmology , tumor research , dementia research and nephrology , a branch of internal medicine , are funded. In addition, facilities that carry out therapeutically meaningful and efficient measures are supported.

Ophthalmology

An important area in which scientific projects and studies are funded is the early detection of eye tumors, especially in childhood. Although eye tumors in children are rare, they are common in the area of malignant tumors . Treatment options have improved significantly in recent years, especially thanks to modern radiation techniques. At the same time, there is little progress in making timely diagnoses. The foundation supports the establishment of a routine examination and the refinement of apparatus and molecular genetic methods.

Another point of ophthalmology is the artificial retina . More than 20% of people over the age of 60 suffer from different degrees of retinal diseases , which in most cases lead to a loss of reading ability or even eyesight . Previous therapies were successful in the short term and also led to detailed improvements, but long-term therapy options for advanced stages are hardly possible. Therefore, the foundation is committed to the development of a retinal prosthesis capable of seeing, in order to at least restore the patient's usual standard of living.

Dementia research

The foundation supports research approaches to explore the connection between high blood pressure and the development of dementia. This gives rise to the field of brain research, which focuses on the loss of brain cells with the following functional disorders.

Nephrology / Oncology

The Nephrology called acute renal failure. It is currently enforcing costly inpatient and outpatient treatments. The foundation supports research into the causes, also in the interests of so-called "high-tech medicine", which includes bone marrow transplants , for example .

Oncology refers to palliative medicine and pain treatment. One focus of the funding is the analysis of the effect as well as the implementation of palliative-medical structures and pain-therapeutic measures. In the course of this, one-year scholarships are awarded to give young scientists the opportunity to undergo high-quality training at home and abroad. Scientific projects are also financed to a limited extent.

Business Administration

Within the economic research and teaching, the foundation has made it its goal to support business administration in particular . As conditions in this area are constantly changing, new, modern initiatives are required. Above all, high-performing young talent should be specifically promoted. Here, too, existing facilities and institutes are encouraged to come up with new ideas.

Culture and social affairs

In contrast to the first two areas mentioned, support for culture and welfare is largely limited to Wuppertal. First and foremost, the urban cultural landscape is to be strengthened and promoted in the social area through financial support for institutions, initiatives and projects. Another goal is to beautify the cityscape. This also includes the preservation of monuments and renovation measures for listed buildings . In particular, the foundation becomes active when public funds are not available or not enough.

Medical Board of Trustees

This board of trustees consists of Ulrich Dührsen (Director of the Clinic for Hematology , University Clinic Essen ), Daniel Pauleikhoff (Eye Department at St. Franziskus-Hospital Münster ) and Oliver Witzke (Deputy Director of the Clinic for Nephrology, University Clinic Essen).

Board of Trustees for Business Administration

Koch (Rector of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal ) and Ulrich Hülsbeck, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Huf Hülsbeck & Fürst . The foundation's activities in the field of business administration include endowed chairs, targeted grants to institutions, especially in the higher education sector, the award of scholarships for masters , doctorates and habilitation as well as support for socially relevant projects in business education and training. chosen projects

The foundation has already carried out several projects at universities. An endowed chair for business administration , particularly controlling , was introduced at the University of Witten / Herdecke .
